City Council Reso 16-43 Support
February 24, 2016
In support of Honolulu City Council Resolution 16-43
Aloha Councilmembers,
Resolution 16-43, introduced by Councilwoman Pine, aims to extend working hours for lifeguards as well as address further lifeguard coverage of our beaches. The ocean is an integral part of our culture, economy, and lifestyle here in Hawai‘i, and is widely used by residents and visitors alike.
I highly support extending working hours for lifeguards beyond their current 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM shifts because people are often in the water long before and after these times. During the winter season when we have much more dangerous ocean conditions overall, it would be most prudent to have longer hours as well as more lifeguard coverage at beaches susceptible to dangerous conditions. If this can also provide more jobs for qualified residents, I find it to be a positive move all around.
Thus, I urge the Council to pass Resolution 16-43 to continue aid our amazing lifeguards in keeping our ocean safe, as well as continue to provide the highest level of safety supervision for all who enjoy our waters.
Respectfully,
Senator Maile S. L. Shimabukuro
