Weather Alerts – Stay Informed

Please see information that was sent to us by Rock Arakaki (original information from Crystal Beelen/City DEM).

STAY INFORMED:
*   NOAA Weather Radio – NOAA Weather Alert Radios can notify you 24 hours a day to hazards in our area including severe weather, hurricanes and tropical storms, and tsunami events. In addition, many of these units can activate other warning devices such as a strobe light to provide a visual warning. These radios are available from many Oahu electronics and department stores.

*   NIXLE Messaging – The Department of Emergency Management (DEM) highly recommends signing up to receive emergency email and text messages sent directly to your cell phone from Nixle. Go to www.nixle.com/dem<http://www.nixle.com/dem> to set up your account. Standard text messaging charges may apply.

* ReadyHawaii App – Be ready for hurricanes, tsunamis, and other natural or man-made disasters with the official Ready Hawaii app. With Ready Hawaii you can also access the tsunami and new Extreme Tsunami Evacuation Zone maps. Preparing for disasters is one of the most important things you can do for the safety of you and your family; this app will help you to make a plan, make a kit, and be informed! Ready Hawaii can be downloaded for free on iTunes or Google Play.

Simple reminders:

GET PREPARED
*   Clear area around home
* If trash pickup is between now and/or Wednesday or you can store your trash bins in your garage, trim trees and shrubs around your home to make them more wind resistant.
*   Clear clogged rain gutters and downspouts.
*   Bring in all outdoor furniture, decorations, garbage cans and anything else that is not tied down.
* Know where your family meeting points are if you need to evacuate.
*   Update important contacts and create phone tree
*   Have a minimum 7-Day Emergency Supply Kit (i.e. Bug out Bag) which contain the following items:
o   Water – One gallon of water per person per day for seven-days for drinking and sanitation
o   Food – Non-perishable food that does not require cooking
o Eating Utensils – Plates, mess kits, forks and chop sticks.  Don’t forget a non-electric can opener for canned foods
o   Radio – Battery-powered or hand crank radio with NOAA Weather alert
o   Light – Flashlight and/or a portable fluorescent or LED light (hand crank and solar work well too)
o   Spare batteries – Check to ensure its not corroded (i.e. not rusted, leaking, discolored).
o   First Aid – Get a first aid kit and refresh first aid, CPR, AED skills  (remember CPR stands for C=Call 9-1-1, P=Push hard & fast in middle of chest & R=Respond don’t hesitate)
o   Whistle – Important for signaling for help.  A whistle carries much farther than the human voice and uses less energy than yelling
o   Dust Mask – Helps to filter contaminated air
o Sanitation – Moist towelettes, toilet paper, 5-gallon bucket, baking soda / kitty litter, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
o   Tools – Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities, duct tape o   Maps – Local area maps
o   Prescription – Special medications and glasses
o   Baby – Infant formula and diapers o   Caregivers – Incontinent Supplies, medical devices and equipment
o   Pets – Pet food and extra water for your pet
o   Other – Cash, important documents and family photo
