Subject: H-1 Freeway Westbound Improvements Update

Aloha Everyone, On behalf of the Highways Division, we wanted to provide a brief update for your use RE: the H-1 Freeway Westbound Improvements.  Please feel free to share this information with your constituents and colleagues.  The H-1 Pearl City Viaduct widening work can be difficult to see over the barriers from the freeway lanes, so the attached photos may help motorists to understand exactly where and what work is occurring.  We hope this summary helps.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  Mahalo!

H-1 Freeway Westbound Improvements Update HDOT is continuing its work on H-1 Freeway westbound improvements to help alleviate rush-hour traffic between Aiea and Waikele.  The overall plan has three components: (1) use of the rightmost shoulder lane during afternoon rush-hours between Aiea and the Waimalu/Pearl City exit, (2) a new lane being constructed on the Pearl City Viaduct and (3) a new lane being constructed between the H-1/H-2 Split and the Waikele exit.  The new lanes will remove traffic bottlenecks in Aiea, at the Waimalu on-ramp and at the H-1/H-2 Split, allowing increased traffic flow through this corridor and will also help to address westbound traffic backups during morning rush-hours while the ZipperLane is open for eastbound traffic.  These new lanes will be opened sequentially as they are ready for use and project completion is anticipated in August.

Widening work continues on the H-1 Pearl City Viaduct to add the additional lane between the westbound Waimalu on-ramp and the Waipahu off-ramp.  Daytime work includes a single right lane closure in this area, Mon. through Fri. from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., daily.  Nighttime work includes three right lane closures from 8 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. for girder installations.  Weekend work is also necessary for concrete pours to create the new lane surface and is scheduled every other weekend from 8 p.m. on Sat. nights through 6 p.m. on Sun. evenings.  Three right lanes are closed during these hours as the concrete cures and single lanes are reopened from left to right at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Sundays.  For up-to-date lane closure schedules, please visit HDOT’s roadwork website at http://hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/roadwork/ or call the Project Hotline at 945-1144.  HDOT thanks Oahu’s motorists for their patience and kokua during these needed improvements.
