DOT Updates 12/23/14

Maile Lei 160Here are some recent updates from the Department of Transportation (DOT):

Nanakuli Turn Lanes: I obtained funding for this project, which will create a 17-car turn lane at Haleakala Ave., and a 21-car turn lane at Nanakuli Ave., both in the Honolulu-bound direction. Fortunately, DOT has ended lane closures for the next 3-4 months, and they are considering night work. For more information, contact Derek Inoshita at 587-2160 or Kaikor Construction at 841-3110.

Farrington Highway Landscaping: DOT is considering using xeriscape or other drought-resistant vegetation, which will require less maintenance, and thereby less lane closures.

Medians/Concrete Barriers: Rep. Awana obtained $10m in 2014 for concrete barriers and other safety improvements along Farrington Hwy. DOT will follow-up.

Makaha Surfing Beach: I informed DOT that the funds obtained by Councilwoman Pine for a feasibility study to re-route the highway mauka of the canoe hale were restored to the City budget. DOT will follow-up.

Contraflow Lane in Nanakuli: I will be working with DOT to draft a proposal for a feasibility study for a 5th contraflow lane in Nanakuli to alleviate the heavy traffic. I will also be meeting with the Hawaiian Railway Society and area residents to discuss this possible option.

As a reminder, Opening Day is on 1/21/15. The public is invited to observe and visit legislators’ offices. My office will be serving light refreshments. Check my blog for Opening Day updates, at 21maile.com.
