Re: Emergency Permit Request for Treatment and Storage of Waste Fireworks from Grucci, Inc. (operator) and Robert Hoohuli (landowner)

Dear Mr. Kalaiwaa,

I am writing to voice my strong opposition to the permit request above. I have received a number of negative responses from constituents who feel it is not appropriate to discharge dangerous fireworks from the same batch which resulted in tragic deaths for disposal on the Waianae Coast.

I understand that the intent is that there would be at least one day per month, once the permit is issued, when approximately 900 devices (out of an estimated total of 5,400 devices) would be set off in a manner consistent with “normal” use of these aerial fireworks. I also understand that it would take approximately 6 months (at one day per month) to dispose of all the devices.

Due to residents’ concerns regarding the health and safety implications of fireworks disposal on the Waianae Coast, I urge the Department of Health to reconsider its tentative decision to issue the emergency permit.

Mahalo for your consideration,
~Maile
