Here in Hawai‘i, the kiawe tree grows abundantly and is revered for its use as imu wood, but many are unaware of its significance as a sustainable food resource.  Vince Kana‘i Dodge of ‘Ai Pōhaku and Joshua Morimoto, Kiawe Youth Intern will lead us in an informational workshop on the historical uses of the kiawe tree, kiawe gathering, and the many ways in which kiawe can be prepared to create food products that are not only gluten-free, but also diabetes friendly.  There will be kiawe bean samples for us to look at in case people are interested in collecting and processing kiawe beans on their own.  We will also be making ‘āina bars, an extremely ‘ono and healthy snack made from kiawe flour.  We encourage youth to attend this workshop.  Kiawe flour will be available for purchase.

Registration is required for this workshop and we encourage families to attend together.  To register, please go to  If you have any questions, please contact us by email at or call (808) 220-4166.
