On 11/21/13, the Legislature hosted a follow-up informational briefing to discuss the audit of DHHL’s residential lease program, vacancies, and potential legislative and administrative solutions. Hawaii Public Radio (HPR) reported on the briefing, and a link to HPR’s news report can be found on this link:

During the briefing, Senator Maile Shimabukuro, chair of the Senate Hawaiian Affairs Committee, highlighted 3 potential bills recommended by an ad hoc roundtable group:

  1. Apply recently enacted foreclosure reform, including a moratorium on lease cancelations, to DHHL leases
  2. Independent counsel for DHHL.
  3. Selection commission for DHHL commissioners (similar to how judges are selected)

A written summary of the informational briefing will soon be made available to the public.
