Developer Hunt Cos. plans to add about 4,000 homes at Kalaeloa in West Oahu over the next 20 years, according to a master plan presented to the Hawaii Community Development Authority, the state agency that oversees development at the former Barbers Point Naval Air Station.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports the plan presented Wednesday by Hunt, which acquired some 540 acres at Kalaeloa from the Navy in 2009, forecasts 7,000 jobs for the area and includes an initial phase of former military barracks to be converted to about 100 affordable rental apartments, a grocery-anchored retail center and a light-industrial park, which Hunt expects to complete in seven years.

A partnership between Hunt and Scatec Solar recently selected Swinerton Builders to build a 5-megawatt solar farm on 20 acres of the former Navy land at Kalaeloa.

Hunt Builds Nation's First Net-Zero Energy, LEED Platinum, Affordable Housing CommunityEl Paso, TX  – Kaupuni Village, constructed by Hunt Companies, Inc. as the nation’s first net-zero affordable housing project, has achieved LEED Platinum Certification in the LEED for Homes Rating System. Kaupuni Village was planned and developed by the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL) as a model for their future developments.

Located on the Wai‘anae coast of Oahu, Kaupuni Village is an affordable community for residents that meet the income requirements below 80 percent of the area median income. All three- and four-bedroom homes within the community were designed with energy efficient features such as solar water heating, photovoltaic panels to generate electricity, renewable materials, natural daylight, an energy monitoring dashboard and energy efficient lighting and appliances. These features, along with the residents following an energy-efficient and sustainable lifestyle have enabled the community to achieve net-zero energy performance.

Kaupuni Village’s community center, Hale Kumuwaiwai, will provide residents with opportunities to grow and prepare their own foods through a variety of gardening spaces, aquaculture ponds, imu oven and kitchen facilities. The center also features a pavilion for community gatherings, hula and other cultural activities.

Kaupuni Village was also the winner of the 2011 USGBC Hawaii Chapter’s Outstanding Green Project Team Award. This award honored Kaupuni Village and the DHHL development and design team for demonstrating a holistic approach towards integrating green building practices and principles into a LEED project as well as the development of innovative solutions to regional design challenges.
