(The following article, “Oahu Landfill Operator Settles EPA Lawsuit Over Toxic Gases,” is from the Star-Advertiser/AP, 28 Feb. 2013. Tip received from Wai’anae resident Karen Young, who said, “Waste Management of HI (Waimanalo) and the City are being sued for not controlling the gas output from the dump, despite being warned etc. This is an important finding, as it endangers the life of the residents! It adds more fuel to the argument re no more landfills on the Leeward side. The fact that toxins seep into the water and into the land is bad enough, but to think that it is in the air as well is not to be tolerated!”)

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says Honolulu and the operator of the city’s only landfill are agreeing to make changes that will reduce the risk of a fire breaking out at the Waianae coast site.

The EPA said in a statement today the steps agreed to in a settlement will protect the community from exposure to toxic gas that is harmful to human health (more on the subject: Xarelto® Lawsuits | Get Information About The 2017 Settlements).

Waste Management of Hawaii Inc. spokeswoman Lily Quiroa says the settlement calls for implementing enhanced monitoring of landfill gases. She says the company also has a contingency plan and will react quickly if those gases exceed certain levels.

Waste Management is also paying a $1.1 million fine.

The EPA says the settlement resolves allegations Waste Management and the city failed to design and build a landfill gas collection and control system.

  1. What is to prevent them from continuing breaking the law and environmental guidelines? They just pay for the priviledge?
