Testimony Needed for Hawaiian Language Immersion Measures on March 21

requires that HI State Assessment Tests (HSA) for Hawaiian Language Immersion students in grades 3-6 be given in Hawaiian rather than English. Here is a link to the HB 2875:

“REQUESTING A MEMORANDUM OF AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AND AHA KAULEO KAIAPUNI HAWAII FOR DEVELOPMENT IN THE HAWAIIAN LANGUAGE OF THE READING, MATH, SCIENCE, AND OTHER ASSESSMENTS ADMINISTERED TO STUDENTS IN GRADES THREE THROUGH SIX OF THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION’S HAWAIIAN LANGUAGE IMMERSION PROGRAM AND FORMAL ACKNOWLEDGMENT BY STATUTE OR RULE OF AHA KAULEO KAIAPUNI HAWAII,” will be heard 3/21/12. “REQUESTING A REVIEW OF THE STATE’S FUNDING FOR EXISTING ESL PROGRAMS AND HAWAIIAN LANGUAGE PROGRAMS OFFERED IN HAWAII AND ANY DISPARITIES IN FUNDING FOR THE STATE’S TWO OFFICIAL LANGUAGES,” will be heard 3/21/12. Here is a link to the resolution:

The committees on Hawaiian Affairs and Education (HWN/EDU) have scheduled a public hearing on the measures above on 03-21-12, 1:15PM, in conference room 225. You should submit testimony 24 hours in advance via e-mail at HWNtestimony@capitol.hawaii.gov and EDUtestimony@capitol.hawaii.gov (Note: Late testimony is also usually accepted, but may not make it into the official record).
