Off-the-Grid Housing Bill to Be Heard 2/10/12

SB2639, which removes barriers faced by DHHL to offering more vacant, infrastructure-free lots to beneficiaries, has been scheduled for hearing on Friday, 2/10/12, at 2:45pm. The bill aims to provide a more affordable and “aina-based” option to those beneficiaries who desire this lifestyle.

Sand Preservation Bill to Be Heard on Monday, 2/13/12

HB 2396 (companion to SB 2305), is scheduled to be heard on 2/13/12 at 9am. The bill deletes the “one gallon per person per day” allowance for the taking of sand, rocks, and soil from the shoreline.

Sen. Shimabukuro will ask the House to consider that exceptions be made for emergencies (eg, if sandbags are needed to prevent flooding), and for Hawaiian cultural and traditional practices. The Senate adopted these changes to SB 2305.

Mahalo nui loa to long time fisherman Carl Jellings, and Waianae residents Nick Smith and Karen Young for supporting this measure.
