Wai`anae Intermediate Students Need Funds for Trip to Our Nation’s Capitol

This spring, 25 students from Wai`anae Intermediate School have the unique opportunity to participate in one of the Close Up Foundation’s weeklong, “hands-on,” government studies programs.  They will travel to Washington, DC, utilize the city as a living classroom, meet with members of Congress, leading political experts, as well as conference with their peers from around the country on current issues… providing they can raise the funds for this once in a lifetime opportunity.

“During their week in Washington, the students attend seminars on Capitol Hill and will meet with our very own government officials, political experts, and even lobbyists, to better understand the branches of government, and the ways in which they can become more involved community citizens,” explains Mr. Elten Lau, the counselor coordinating this program at the school.

Along with students from all over the nation, our students will engage in daily debates, discussions, and activities focused on the latest political topics being discussed on Capitol Hill. The goal is that these students will return home with an increased interest in national, state, and local matters.

Since civic education is for everyone, and not just the most privileged, Wai’anae Intermediate School needs local community support to make this valuable educational program available to all students, regardless of their financial background. The tuition per student for the Close Up program is $2,600 and is all-inclusive. Contributions would be an investment in our community’s future.

Close Up Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization, and contributions may be tax-deductible.  For more information on Close Up and their mission, call 800-CLOSE UP (256-7387), or visit www.closeup.org.
